LIVERMORE, CALIF.—March 24, 2012, at the Bankhead. Music of the Masters.
The LAS concert of March 24th at the Bankhead Theater offers a program filled with many delights with its varying themes and styles. It highlights the talents of former resident Laura Hamilton, who returns home to Livermore from New York to join conductor Arthur Barnes in the performance of Mendelssohn’s violin concerto. According to Ms. Hamilton, this concerto has “everything”—lyricism, drama and playfulness—which makes it one of the best-loved pieces for the musical audience and a challenge for the violinist.
The program also features Wagner’s overture to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. The overture introduces the various melodies (motifs) which are associated with particular people and ideas in the evolving drama of Wagner's comic opera; in the opera, the story of a romantic love triangle is played out against the backdrop of a song contest in which a real-life guild of poets and musicians compete.
In the concluding work of the March 24th concert, the pomp of Wagner gives way to a contrast in both scene and musical style: In Dvořák’s sixth symphony, the composer depicts a wide panorama of his Czech homeland. Scenes of pastoral beauty are enlivened with peasant dances. Through Dvořák’s musical imagination, the audience is given an understanding of Czech culture. A fitting end to a very special evening!
The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the Bankhead Theater at 2400 First Street in downtown Livermore and is preceded by a Prelude pre-concert talk from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:45 p.m.
This concert is dedicated to Marion Clark and Arnold Clark.
